Herts Senior Football League 4th June 2011
Posted 16 Jul 2011 07:28 by Mairead CurranCambridge Parnells 0-14 St Vincents 1-8
Cambridge Parnells took on an undefeated St Vincents team in a blustery Coldhams Common on Saturday the 4th of June.
Cambridge took the game to an understrength Vincents right from the throw in and were 0-2 to no score up after 6 minutes thanks to scores from Mark Sweeney and the ever reliable Padraig Finn, both from play. Indeed Finn went onto score the next 5 points, 2 frees, a '45, a lovely effort from play after good build up involving Sweeney and Craig Byrne and finally a majestic effort from some 45m way out on the left hand side of the pitch. With Parnells cruising 0-7 to no score Vincents were feeling the pressure, none more so then their 'keeper who decided to walk off the pitch mid way through the 1st half.
Vincents finally started coming into the game towards the end partially helped due to slack defending from Parnells. They scored 3 points sandwiched in between a lovely effort by Richie Austria following a great breakaway move by parnells from a vincents '45. With the first half coming to a close Gareth Morgan finished off some fine play by Peter Gallagher before another Vincents point. Mark Sweeney finished off the 1st half like he started with a point leaving the HT score at 0-10 to 0-4 to Parnells.
The second half started off in scrappy fashion. The first goal chance of the game fell to Gary Heaney, making a welcome return to the Parnells team, however his tame effort was saved. Peter Gallagher scored the 1st score after 10mins following a short '45. Then Gary Murray marauding forward from centre half back scored a lovely point after a quick free from Gallagher. Luton in response scored 1-2, the goal coming after a defensive mix up from a long free. Padraig Finn scored another free before an excellent long range point from one of the Vincents forwards. With game nicely poised at 0-13 to 1-7 coming into the final 10mins Parnells had a goal controversially ruled out for being a square ball. Craig Byrne got Cambridge Parnells final score with time running out for Vincents who despite trying hard the in second half only scored once more before the end of the match leaving the final score 0-14 to 1-8.
